The bucket test is performed using a 5 gallon bucket (available at Home Depot or Lowe's) and either tape or a marker to measure the water levels. 


First, fill the 5 gallon bucket to a set level (or to the brim). Mark level on bucket.


Next, place the bucket in the pool and mark the pool's water level on the outside of the bucket. Ensure the pumps are off during this step. 


Wait 24 hours after the pump has been running on its normal cycle before taking the second measurement. 


Compare the 24 hour marks on the outside of the bucket (aka the pool level) vs the measurement inside of the bucket (aka the evaporation losses). A pool that is not leaking will typically lose between 1/8" - 1/2" per day depending on the evaporation rate.
